TOPIC: Should an artist develope just one " STYLE "

I have never managed to commit to one style! I paint wildlife in acrylic, which is my 'bread and butter' if you like - but I love playing with different media and subjects. My current favourite is gold leaf with egg tempera, which is probably as far away from wildlife art as you can get! And next year I'm going to learn a bit about oil painting....

Regarding art school, I haven't been myself, but my daughter had a pretty negative experience - her tutor was a conceptual artist and she definitely isn't! I've sure lots of people have loved it though

Haha! thinkirishart, no, the meeting has not yet taken place. It should have been arranged for this Wednesday coming but we've had loads of snow so I'm going to postpone it until next week. This happens a lot here because we live in a very rural place so many of us get snowed in. I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi Tony, Welcome. I believe "self taught " is the way to go [ with as much encouragement as possible along the way ]

Thanks for that , Manda. It would appear that changes need to take place in our art schools. Take care.

Hi Cathy, I know the feeling - snowed in here at the moment too and if the forecast is correct I'll be expecting food - drops by helicopter

I went to art school and they never forced us to have only one style. Galleries find it easier to market an artist if they can pigeon hole you as a landscape artist, portrait painter, illustrator, etc. I love illustrating stories but also enjoy painting portraits, landscapes, etc.My illustrations are often painted in t a different style from my paintings of people or landscapes. I have also begun to create jewelry and mosaics. I love learning and never want to get stuck in only one style. I think that this probably is something that has kept me from making it "big" so to speak, but I also think that I would be miserable if I did nothing but variations of the same thing just to make galleries happy. I think that you should do what makes you happy.
