TOPIC: What is Fine Art?
#1263
What is Fine Art? 9 Years, 7 Months ago
I would love to know the definition of Fine Art. I was contacted by a gallery who said that my paintings were not 'fine art' enough. I asked them to explain but no reply (surprise, surprise).

Is it that it has to follow the traditional methods of painting? But then what about some abstract work? I find this so confusing. I have absolutely no idea which bracket my work falls in and wonder if others also have a problem putting it into a bracket. Does this leave my work without identity?

Could my work be described as decorative art? If that's the case, is that somehow perceived by galleries not as good as 'fine art'? Why else have the definition of 'fine' and thereby implying that it's better?

Would love your thoughts on this.

Now you've gone an opened a can of worms..hehehe....we could define "fine art" from now until doomsday I think. You just keep doing what you're doing. It's really nice work. What weren't considered "fine art" when Van Gogh painted it, would definitely get that title now. I wouldn't spend another 5 minutes worrying about what in the world they have in their beady little brains. hehehe. What I do isn't considered fine art or in some galleries, not art at all. It creates a marketing problem when you don't fit neatly into a category, but there are thousands of galleries, arts/crafts shows, and your own website to overcome that small hurdle.

Frankly, I think I'd rather have my art not have a category. I think it has more of an identity without being able to easily say...oh, that's post post modern expressionism.

haha! You have a point and I'm not too worried except that it does give me a problem when approaching galleries. Still, Christies selected me so I'm not going to worry any more! lol

I think sometimes galleries (and critics) define 'fine art' depending on what they perceive will catch the highest price point.

Art seems alot like fashion to me... popular one season, and a waste the next.

You've got a point there Bonita. Someone on Twitter said to me that 'fine art' is a label used indiscriminately to say, we like or don't like your stuff.

well put micketartglass. it's kind of a catch 22 though.. i hate labels, yet people need some way to describe things, and labels are subject to other's interpretations.
