There are two types Cathy. They call then both electric erasers.

One is small lightweight and run off batters.
The other is heavier and fully electric . (where you have the power cord to contend with).

I have only ever used the small batter operated one.
Maybe one of the members has used the fully electric one and can tell you what it's like.
There is also a big price difference. The batter operated is under $10 and the fully electric is around $100

But why do they need to be electric/battery operated? That's what I don't get. If it's to move the rubber, doesn't that mean you have a lot less control?

Cathy, because the erasors are so small and they vibrate, they give more control. They are useless for large areas but really good at removing small ones. I used one for the highlights in the ears for this dog...
