Oh, advice is cool - so no worries!
I just thought I'd share a snippet of what I was going for.

But seriously... I think I will pull this back into Blender and see if I can get it looking more like the actual coke bottle (sans logo - I'm not THAT good)

None of the 3D art programs including Maya have good refraction that you could use to make a lens that focuses. So you are faking it. I always use about 10% reflection for glass. Start with a square box made of "glass" put something in it. If it looks like the something is pasted to the front and side of the box instead of being a single object in the center of the box work with the refraction. Less is better than more. Try none. You could just use no glass at all if yuo don't have reflection. Maya will separate the colors when refraction is used but it can't really do a prism. This property works best with water.

Thanks for the tip. I ran into issues like this when I wanted to do a disco ball - you definitely have to fake that.
